Missions of God’s people

By Christopher Wright

“What does theology and mission have to do with each other.” In The Mission of God’s People, Christopher Wright reveals that a typical Christian understanding of missions encompasses only a small part of God’s over-arching mission for the world.

Examining both the Old and New Testament, Wright demonstrates that a proper theological study of the Bible would reveal that God’s mission is to redeem and reclaim the entire world to Himself; God’s mission then becomes the template by which His people are to live in the world. This book, then, not only clarifies the theological continuity between both Testaments but also demonstrates that the Bible has one coherent narrative.

The 15 chapters of The Mission of God’s People will challenge, broaden and re-orientate Christians understanding of missions and compel them to respond practically to what God is doing in the world.

Each chapter concludes with a summary and three relevant questions.

1. Romans

Paul’s letter to the Romans unpacks the significance of Jesus and what he did. Paul explains crucial doctrines such as original sin, election, substitutionary atonement, the role of the law, and justification by faith alone.

2. Philippians

Philippians is a call to emulate the humble sacrificial example of others: Paul himself, Epaphroditus, Timothy, and especially Jesus. Christians are encouraged to run the race and commit toward living out Christ’s love and humility as well as holding out the gospel of hope to the world.

3. James

The book of James provides practical advice and challenging teachings on wealth, anointing with oil, prayer, healing, and the relationship between faith and works. This book is a stirring exhortation to fruitfulness – ultimately reminding believers of the necessary connection between genuine faith and heartfelt obedience.

4. Proverbs

The book of Proverbs provides wise instruction for godly living that glorifies God in daily life and in relationships. This book emphasizes on how relating rightly to God involves first, seeking to understand the truth, and second, embracing and obeying that truth. It shows how God’s ways are intensely practical and applicable to every aspect of our lives.

5. Psalms

The Book of Psalms powerfully resonates with the whole spectrum of human emotions and experience including love and adoration toward God, sorrow over sin, dependence on God in desperate circumstances, the battle of fear and trust, walking with God even when the way seems dark, thankfulness for God’s care and confidence in the eventual triumph of God’s purposes in the world. This book explores the Bible’s ability to transform our emotions and incline our hearts toward worship.
